Alumnus Hits the Big Screen in The Revenant

With over 164 television shows and films under his belt, Tim Sitarz (‘95) has built an incredible career as a professional stuntman in Hollywood. From the very beginning, Sitarz’s dream was to make it to the big screen. His journey was one that took all sorts of twists and turns – unpredictable in nature.

“When I was young, I had three dreams: to become a Navy Seal, a professional football player, and a stuntman in Hollywood,” stated Sitarz. Remarkably, he accomplished two out of the three; being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles (where he suffered an initial injury) and then off to Hollywood as a professional stuntman.

Tim grew up in Minnesota and graduated in 1995 with a degree in Communication.  During his time at UMD, he played on the football team and embraced college life. “I was a T.A. for Public Speaking, and I always enjoyed working with students and making the classroom fun,” he stated. Sitarz’s favorite memory was when the football team would host the annual lineman party/BBQ. “We would get together and have a scavenger hunt challenge to find items that our house needed at the time.”

When it comes to his work today as a Hollywood stuntman, Sitarz has established himself in a unique way – he’s 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds. “I’m always playing the bad guy…but it’s really fun becoming something completely different than who I am in real life,” he laughed.

His roles have ranged from jumping through glass windows on the Last Rights, doubling as Toby Keith, to his most recent role in a fighting scene (computer-generated model) with superstar, Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant. “Being given the opportunity to work with some of the top industry directors and actors is a great privilege,” he said. The Revenant was unlike many of the films and TV shows that Tim has stunted for. “Director Alejandro González Iñárritu only wanted to shoot with natural light, which meant we had a three-to-five hour window to get the shot.” Of all the roles that Sitarz has portrayed, he believed that, “The Revenant fight scene was the most demanding and exhausting project he has worked on.”

Tim currently lives in California with his wife and three daughters and loves being a family-man. In 2015, Sitarz made it back to UMD for the first time in 20 years as the keynote speaker for Dinner with the Champions. His message to students and alumni is to, “Do what makes you happy… Discover what excites you and go for it.”  His passion and drive truly embodies the Bulldog spirit!
