Day 31 – Fun

Posted by:

It’s officially 2014, and we’re excited to start a brand new year in the Alumni Association Office. There’s always something exciting about a new year. It’s not always the resolutions, but the idea of starting a new, starting fresh. So, with that fresh start in mind, we’re bringing our 31 Days of Bulldog Country to a close. For the month of December, anyway.

We’ve had a lot of fun over the past 31 days, but we’ve had an even better time ...

Day 30 – Winter Wonderland

Posted by:

Duluth is famous for many things – the aerial lift bridge, beautiful fall colors, a host of fantastic restaurants and breweries – but it recently gained some notoriety as one of the 10 best snowboarding locations for college students.

While this came as a surprise to some, it was old news to the UMD Snowboarding Club.

“There are a few reasons Duluth is such a prime location for snowboarders,” club president Logan Goss said. “There are three hills within 20 ...

Day 29 – Sky View

Posted by:

We don’t mean to sound melancholy when we say what we’re about to say, but how can it be possible that December is so close to be over? Add on top of that, the year is almost over! How is this possible? Many great things have happened in the past 12 months, and its in thank to you, our alumni and friends. Without you, there wouldn’t be an alumni association. As we head into 2014, we hope you’ll keep in ...

Day 28 – Words

Posted by:

UMD really is a university for everyone. From civil engineering to theater arts, there’s a program for absolutely everyone to come, study, and graduate with a world-class education. There’s a slew of stories that demonstrate exactly how great a UMD education and experience is. Brian Kobilka winning the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Mark Pavelich skating and shooting pucks against the Russian Olympic team with Team USA in the 1980 Winter Games. Yvonne Prettner-Solon serving alongside Mark Dayton as Lieutenant Governor ...

Day 27 – Night Time

Posted by:

Just like we said a few days ago, morning’s in Duluth are a special treat rewarding those brave enough to wake up in the wee hours of the day. On the flip side, night time holds its own sort of magic for the Northland. Walking along the boardwalk on a warm summer night? Pretty remarkable.

We’re betting more of us are night owls than early-bird risers, and Lake Superior has a few surprises for you, too. Have you ever seen a ...

Day 26 – Grateful

Posted by:

UMD wasn’t always the university that it is today. It wasn’t even originally a part of the U of M university system! Originally known as the Duluth State Teachers College, the university didn’t offer nearly as many choices in what a student could major in. A student could also fund themselves all the way though a four-year degree with a summer job and an eye towards savings. The athletics, the clubs, Greek Life, the faculty…all of it was incredibly different ...

Day 25 – Morning

Posted by:

It’s incredibly hard to rouse oneself to get up in the morning on a regular basis, let alone willingly get us at an incredibly earlier hour than usual. But, living in the Northland, we’re often rewarded for our efforts. Next time you’re up before the rest of the world, try and catch the sunrise over Lake Superior. Or the next time Finals Week rolls around and after glancing at the clock, you realize its better to stay awake for that ...

Day 24 – Something You Always Do

Posted by:

Everybody has a routine. Wake up in the morning, stretch, maybe a little yoga. Shower, pick out clothes for the day, head upstairs and make a small breakfast. Brew a cup of coffee while styling hair. Start car to warm up, fill up a to-go thermos, pull on winter coat, slip on boots, and out the door to work.

Sound familiar on a normal winter-season work day? Now think about your days off. No plan, no agenda. What is it you ...

Day 23 – Scarf

Posted by:

Is there any outfit that doesn’t look good with a little bit of maroon and gold sprinkled into it? Scarves can add warmth, complete a look or define your style. As we like to call it, it’s adding to your Bulldog Style!

The best thing about scarves? They can be worn in dozens of ways. Knotted, looped, tied, or wrapped–scarves can be worn about any way you can imagine. Even better? You can wear them with just about anything. T-shirts, sweatshirts, ...

Day 22 – Tradition

Posted by:

There are a lot of traditions here at UMD: Greek life chariot races during half-time at the Homecoming football game, tailgating outside of Malosky before every home football game, the student section at both men’s and women’s hockey games, pulling all-nighters for finals which start in the UMD Library, and many, many other things.

Did you know when you toured UMD as a prospective student you took part in one often looked over UMD tradition? Hanging in the UMD Library atrium, ...
