Ready to Run? The 38th Grandma’s Marathon Is This Weekend!

Last year, the 37th Grandma’s Marathon saw over 1,100 Bulldogs running in the Midwest’s most scenic long distance race. (We think it’s the best and most scenic in the entire country, but we may be a touch biased in that opinion.) This year, we have 1,000+ Bulldogs running along the North Shore once again in what is the sixth largest marathon in the entire United States. Whether you’re running the 5K, the half, or the full marathon, it’s pretty amazing to know there are over 1,000 UMD Bulldogs running a marathon in the heart of Bulldog Country. Tie those laces, stretch out the legs, and let’s hit the pavement one more time! Here are a few things to keep in mind as the big race and the weekend approaches:

1.) Do You Know How the Marathon Started?
Grandma’s Marathon began in 1977 when a group of local runners planned a scenic road race from Two Harbors to Duluth, Minnesota. There were just 150 participants that year, but organizers knew they had discovered something special. The marathon received its name from the Duluth-based group of famous Grandma’s restaurants – its first major sponsor. The level of sponsorship with the restaurants has changed, but the race has retained its name. Grandma’s Marathon is now a self-governed nonprofit organization with a 17-member board of directors. Grandma’s Marathon weekend draws more than 17,000 participants for its three-race event each June.

2.) Watch Out For Champ!
Champ wouldn’t dare miss an opportunity to cheer on so many running Bulldogs. Keep an eye out for him between Mile 10 and Mile 12 (Nokomis Restaurant and Ryan Road). You just never know what that Bulldog might do.

3.) Don’t Forget To Wear Maroon and Gold!
There’s still time to purchase one of our 2014 UMD Running Tees from UMD Stores. Coming in colors maroon and black with corresponding maroon and gold lettering, every runner will know where you hail from when you wear one of these on the course way. Made by UnderArmor, these running shirts utilize Under Armor’s HeatGear fabric (it keeps you cool, dry and light), moisture transport systems to wick sweat away, and Ultra-Violet Protection Factor (UPF) to protect you from the sun.

These running tees are specially priced at $29.59 for both men’s and women’s shirts after the your alumni discount is applied. And guess what else? You’re also helping our current students out! Five dollars per shirt will also be donated to the UMD Alumni Association scholarship fund. Thank you in advance!

Purchase your shirts online at UMD Stores or stop in the street-level store on UMD’s campus.
