Alumnus Conducting a Successful Career in Sweden

In Vaxjo, Sweden, David Newkumet, a 1984 UMD graduate, teaches music theory and conducts choirs and ensembles in his second language, Swedish. Every year a musical group and a location is chosen for national broadcast, seen by about 1.5 million viewers. In 2009, Newkumet’s choir and the 12th-Century Växjö Cathedral were chosen for this honor.

2011 Equity and Diversity Outstanding Unit Award presented to UMD

The University of Minnesota system presented UMD with the 2011 Equity and Diversity Outstanding Unit Award, recognizing UMD’s commitment to and accomplishments toward integrating equity and diversity into the campus culture. The award was accepted by UMD’s Chancellor Lendley C. Black at an event held in November at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. UMD and Silver Bay, MN Launch Sustainability Project

Creating jobs, producing fuel and food, and improving the environment is the focus of a partnership between the City of Silver Bay, MN and UMD’s Center for Sustainable Community Development (CSCD). The project will create VICTUS Farms, a facility that will house a self-contained food and energy generating eco-system made up of a greenhouse, fish tanks, and algae production areas.

After an extensive national search yielding a strong pool of candidates, Dr. Andrea J. Schokker has been appointed UMD’s Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
