When UMD alumnus Jacob “Jack” Hautaluoma (’55) was approached to help conduct a feasibility study late last year on extracting metals, minerals, and oil from Afghanistan, he first wanted to know that the goal of the project was to improve the lives of the Afghan people and not to make a handful of foreign investors wealthy. “It had to be, not for our good, but for theirs – to do good for the Afghan people,” he said. UMD conferred 2,085 undergraduate degrees, 225 graduate degrees, and five doctoral degrees this school year. The commencement ceremonies highlighted the first graduates from three new degree programs: 39 students from the Civil Engineering undergraduate degree program, 12 students from the Civil Engineering master’s degree program, and the first 3 students from the Iron Range Master of Engineering program. As another school year comes to a close, faculty awards were presented and long-serving faculty members announced their retirements.

UMD and Chanhassen Dinner Theatres (CDT) have created “The Chanhassen Dinner Theatres and the UMD Department of Theatre Educational and Professional Alliance.” The alliance will provide a professional training program for Department of Theatre students, strengthen ties with Duluth and the surrounding communities, and preserve the art form of musical theatre in our communities and state. April 30, 2012 marked the end of a decade of tremendous growth and excitement in Alumni Relations under the direction of Patty DeLano. Patty has retired from her UMD position and looks forward to spending more time with her family, traveling, pursuing hobbies and enjoying her Duluth area home.
