Overtime Thriller Places UMD Football Team in NCAA ll Playoff Game

In a nail-biting overtime last Saturday, the UMD Bulldogs defeated the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals 30-27 to move into the NCAA ll second round playoffs. The #4 Bulldogs travel on Thanksgiving weekend to meet the #1 and undefeated Colorado State University Thunderwolves on their home territory at the Derose Thunderbowl in Pueblo, Colorado. Kickoff is at noon (MT), 1:00 PM (CT) this Saturday, November 26.

The energy was high Wednesday evening, November 9, at the Zeitgeist Atrium in downtown Duluth as the trendy new space filled with nearly 150 UMD students and alumni professionals from a wide variety of careers and businesses; all were there to shake hands, share stories, exchange contact information, and make great connections.  UMD Networking Night, sponsored by the UMD Alumni Association and Liberty Mutual Insurance was a big success according to students, professionals and UMD staff.

UMD’s Center for Economic Development (CED) and Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) will receive a portion of a $1.9 million federal Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge grant to boost jobs and spur businesses in the mining industry.   The objective of the Northeastern Minnesota Mining Cluster is to provide funding for minerals research, workforce development and small business development in northeastern Minnesota in support of the regional mining industry. Linda LeGarde Grover, UMD alumna with degrees in History ’88 and Education ’95 and a UMD associate professor of American Indian Studies, has won the 2011 Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize for Fiction for her debut short story collection, The Dance Boots. UMD Receives $18,183 Energy Rebate Check

Since construction was completed last fall, the new 280 student Ianni Residence Hall has already saved energy and money. Minnesota Power recognized this commitment. The Manager of Energy Efficiency programs, Tina Koecher, presented UMD Chancellor Lendley C. Black with an $18,183 energy rebate check today, awarded through their One Conservation program.
